Expo '74

The World's Fair Heavily Impacted Our Community

Railroads uprooting tracks? Industrial land reclaimed for a park? Expo '74 was the bumblebee that didn't know it couldn't fly.

Led by a group of visionaries, the community rallied around the idea of hosting a world's fair. A countdown on the old Great Northern clock tower reminded everyone daily of the task that lay ahead - buildings to demolish, railroads tracks to tear out, bridges to revamp, countries and businesses and entertainers to contact, new park land to mold and a world to convince to attend!

In the end, the six- month celebration was made possible by years of commitment by community leaders who diligently worked to give us a 100 acre jewel known to us now as Riverfront Park. Join us on May 3 as we celebrate the legacy of Expo ’74.

We are pleased to partner with the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture to set-up this

once-in-a-lifetime nostalgic event.

For more than 63 years the Spokane Parks Foundation has been an independent, non-partisan group working to protect parks throughout Spokane County - regardless of which municipality owns them. We have invested over $2 million in park growth, management and use.

In the early 1950’s we began lobbying for a downtown park - a dream that became a reality 20 years later when Expo ’74 finally made it a reality.

We are proud of our legacy of preserving the past, enriching the present and ensuring the future of our amazing parks, and are proud to host this celebration of Expo ’74.
